The Joan Mitchell Show Baltimore Museumn of Art
"you can always apply more paint"...
-tgirard
I am honest to say that I didn't go into the Joan Mitchell show as a hug fan. Yet I always had a great deal of respect for her bravery and the struggle of being a significant female voice of mid- century art.
I was immediately overwhelmed by the work itself. The commanding scale of most pieces made me feel like melting into them. I was captivated by the action and inaction of the sheer energy in her marks. Although combining media is a formidable activity, I loved that she was all paint.
The exhibition refers to the artist as a "process painter" and I completely related to that comment. She engages the canvas in a powerful way but maintains a kind of vulnerability in many of the pieces.
Back in Studio North, I'm engaging my own canvas, remaining open to being inspired by this enduring legend.
